Paying income tax can be an intimidating process. Many people resort to hiring a chartered accountant and paying extra for their services. However, if you know the basics of paying tax, you can do so, on your own without taking help from a third person. One of the most convenient ways of paying tax is with a Challan 280.

Here is everything you need to know about Challan 280 and how it can help in paying income tax online.

What is Challan 280?

Challan 280 is a special challan that is used while paying advance tax, surcharge, self-assessment tax, tax on regular assessment, and tax on distributed profits. This option allows you to pay tax online from the comfort of your home via the net banking website of your bank.

All you need to do is fill the form and submit it to your bank in order to process your income tax for the said financial year. You can also submit the form offline by visiting your bank branch. Both methods are explained below.

Online submission of Challan 280:

  1. You can visit the income tax website run by the Government of India to download the form. You will be asked to log in after which you will be redirected to the page when the challan can be accessed.

  2. While paying tax as an individual, you need you select option 0021 – Income Tax (Other than Companies).

  3. Fill in the details asked on the form, such as your name, residential address, contact number, email address, year of assessment, PAN card number, etc.

  4. After filling in your personal details, you can move on to selecting the type of payment that you wish to make - for instance, tax on distributed profits, self-assessment tax, etc.

  5. You will again be asked to fill in some details of the type of tax you are paying.

  6. The next step is to select your bank to make a payment.

  7. When you click on submit, you will be asked to enter the Captcha code and verify your information once. It is advisable to read through and confirm that all the data is correctly spelt, numbered, and there are no mistakes.

  8. Post this step, the website will redirect you to your bank’s payment link. You need to enter the login details of your net banking. You also have to enter the amount of tax that you are paying, your name, and your account number.

  9. After you have successfully paid the income tax, you will be sent an email to confirm the receipt. The confirmation mail will contain a PDF document that you can keep as proof.

Offline submission of Challan 280

  1. Just like in the online method, you need to download the form from the income tax website of the Government of India.

  2. After downloading the form, you can take a print out of the document.

  3. As an individual taxpayer, you need you select option 0021 – Income Tax (Other than Companies).

  4. Fill in all the required details like your name, residential address, contact number, email address, year of assessment, PAN card number, etc.

  5. Choose the type of tax that you want to pay. For instance, tax on regular assessment, advance tax, surcharge, etc.

  6. Now take the form and the money due for the tax to your bank’s branch and submit them both there.
