Natural Capital Conservation
Say YES to Save the Godawan
In FY 2015- 16, YES BANK striving to integrate natural capital considerations and creating the conditions necessary to maintain and enhance natural capital as a critical economic, ecological and social asset. Abiding by its commitment and coupled with the vision of Smt. Vasundhara Raje, Hon’ble Chief Minister, Government of Rajasthan, YES BANK developed the ‘SAY YES TO SAVE THE GODAWAN’ campaign to protect and conserve Godawan, the local name for the critically endangered Great Indian Bustard (GIB).
Efforts over the past two years have borne results as the enclosure has now become an activity hub for Godawan and other species like desert cat, vultures, etc. Total number of sightings has increased manifold as more of these critically endangered birds now find a safe haven here.
Less than 250 of these birds remain and has been declared ‘Critically Endangered’ by IUCN Red list with a decreasing population. It is the State bird of Rajasthan and also one of the largest flying birds in the world. YES BANK’s campaign was aimed at addressing GIB conservation.
The campaign focused on sensitization and capacity building of villagers towards the need for protecting the GIB and its habitat, creating awareness on GIB conservation among tourists through hoardings and banners at strategic tourist locations and by developing safe enclosures for GIB in Desert National Park. These enclosures would prevent overgrazing, disturbance by cattle, dogs or other animals whilst giving open access to GIB.
Say YES to Save Our Pride – The One-Horned Rhino
In FY 2013-14, YES BANK with its focus on environmental conservation recognizes the grave concerns over the survival of the Greater One Horned Rhinoceros. Keeping this in mind the Bank has been focusing its Save the Rhino initiative.
As a responsible and sustainability conscious corporate citizen, the Bank partnered with the Government of Assam in launching the ‘YES to Save Our Pride – the One-Horned Rhino’ campaign under the aegis of the YES COMMUNITY initiative.
This campaign formed a crucial part of YES BANK’s broader focus on sustainable development and conserving biodiversity, a commitment that it took by signing the Natural Capital Declaration.
The Kaziranga National Park is home to two-thirds of theworld’s One Horned Rhinos and the Assam Governmenthas undertaken various measures to protect the Rhino andits habitat. To supplement this effort, YES BANK, through the‘YES to Save Our Pride – the One-Horned Rhino’ campaign, conducted on-the-ground interactions with villagers, forest guards and forest officials to understand the man-animalconflict, and threats from poachers and smugglers.
Through YES COMMUNITY, the Bank organised ‘Garh Basauk Abhiyans‘, which aimed at sensitizing people living near the National Park and help convert them into being protectors of the Rhino.
