Livelihood and Water Security
Livelihood & Water Security
YES BANK, since 2014, has provided more than 50 million beneficiaries access to safe and clean drinking water through its ‘Livelihood and Water Security’ CSR intervention.
Water is vital for survival of all known life forms. At present, less than 0.3 % of all freshwater is available for use globally, and this short supply is also increasingly under pressure from increasing demand and pollution. As per a UNICEF report, more than 1 billion people across the world do not have access to clean water, which is a decisive factor to any society’s development as it impacts almost all facets of life - health, hygiene and productivity, among others.
With access to safe and clean water being a critical factor to socio-economic development in India, YES BANK, under its YES COMMUNITY umbrella, launched the Livelihood & Water Security initiative in 2014. The initiative has the following two major focus areas:
Safe and Clean Drinking Water for Communities
The bank has deployed an innovative, membrane-based water purification technology requiring no electricity or chemical-dosing for the purification process. Conventional filters had failed to address key requirements for most communities due to the inability to clear all impurities, need for a constant supply of electricity and being generally unaffordable for most target beneficiaries. The innovative filters use an internationally patented textile-based technology to purify water from any freshwater source, are quick and easy to assemble, and need minimum maintenance, making it ideal in the given context.
In addition to focusing on the availability of clean water, the initiative also sensitized communities in health, supplementary education, sanitation and overall social welfare. YES BANK and its partners, in association with Village Panchayats, and other local bodies, conducted workshops to sensitize target beneficiaries regarding the benefits of the technology and also demonstrated its use.
In the past three years, YES BANK has provided access to safe and clean drinking water to more than 50 million lives through this initiative. The Bank has installed 192 water purification systems at ‘D’ and ‘E’ category railway stations in Maharashtra and has set up more than 150 community water purification systems at key locations in Maharashtra. The Bank has also deployed over 10,000 household water purification systems with the help of NGO partners for last mile implementation, in Raigad, Pune, Kolhapur, Satara and Sangli districts in Maharashtra.
“On the occasion of COP21, one of the commitments by YES BANK is to touch 100 million lives through our safe and clean drinking water program which will further reinforce India’s Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs), by 2020.”
Water Centers and Water ATMs
Expanding upon its current partnerships, YES BANK installed Water Centers and Water ATMs, a unique concept adopted by the Bank to dispense safe and clean drinking water, with the help of the Delhi Jal Board, to provide safe and purified drinking water at an affordable price to underserved communities living in and around the Juggi Jhopdi (JJ) clusters of Delhi.
Safe and Clean Drinking Water at Railways
India has around 7,137 railway stations which transport around 8.4 billion passengers annually. Although the revamp of some key stations by the Indian government is on full swing, category ‘D’ and ‘E’ stations of the country see a dearth in the availability of clean drinking water for the travelers. YES BANK understood this need and therefore, pledged to make safe and clean drinking water available at 1,000 railway stations across India by 2019.
A hundred community water filter systems were installed across 84 ‘D’ and ‘E’ category railway stations in the Konkan belt (Maharashtra) and other locations in the first phase in FY 2015- 16.
In FY 2016-17, YES BANK expanded its reach and provided access to safe and clean drinking water at 192 more railway stations in Solapur, Bhusawal, Nagpur and Pune divisions through installation of similar systems.
